In The Search Of Belonging: Rethinking The Other In The Historical Memory Of Ukrainian Idps

The article is devoted to the analysis of mechanisms of memory and historical past mobilization by the IDPs from Crimea and Donbass in the process of rearticulation of belonging to the new receiving communities. In particular, what are the main dimensions and symbolic markers of temporal location of belonging displayed by the IDPs, and whether their narratives of belonging are shaped as a belonging by choice or rather through the processes of exclusion and Othering. The study is based on both national survey “Region, Nation and More: Interdisciplinary and Transcultural Rethinking of Ukraine” data from 2017, and more than two hundred in-depth interviews conducted since 2014 with people relocated from Crimea and Donbas.
