From The Source To Destination Countries: Central And Eastern Europe On The Move (As Usual)

Migratory flows in Central and Eastern Europe in the twenty-first century are among the most critical factors influencing populations. Based on census data and national statistics from five CEE countries (Belarus, Bulgaria, Estonia, Lithuania, and Poland), this article aims to present migration in the area and its current and potential future effects on the population dynamics. The recent research provides valuable information about demographic trends in the region and suggests policy implications for local policymakers. The wave of refugees and migrants from war-torn Ukraine in 2022 shows the impact of migration on the social situation in the CEE region. Over the past three decades, the area has been a sending destination; this trend has reversed in the last few years, and over 8 million migrants and war refugees have arrived in CEE.
