Before I begin, I need to say something about my terminology. First, m of what follows concerns the interrelations between what is said by a sent relative to a context of use, or" the proposition expressed by that sentence ative to that context", and what is communicated by an utterance of a sente on an occasion} I also speak in what follows of" what an utterance of a tence would communicate in a context". This refers to what an utterance of that sentence would communicate if uttered by the speaker of that context. I also occasionally use the abbreviation" sentence-in-context" instead of the lengthier," sentence relative to a context"
